Research

Many current water quality issues, such as the eutrophication of water bodies, contamination in urban runoff, and leaching of agriculturally applied chemicals, may be mitigated with engineered bioretention areas A better understanding of the processes and management of bioretention areas can also lead to progress in practical applications such as low impact development, mitigation of impaired ecosystems, and sanitation and water quality in developing countries. The focus of the research is applying soil chemistry and hydrology to engineering a specific soil column studied in field scale lysimeters The lysimeters study will also allow for the monitoring of many other factors that may be correlated or otherwise important to the nutrient uptake measurements, such as evapotransporation, infiltration rates, and temperatures. Results from the research might include a soil layout for optimal filtration of pollutants, total capacities and rates of nutrient removal for specific soils, efficiencies over various concentrations of pollutants, and the affects of vegetation on the design.

Other Projects

In addition to my thesis research, I participate in other projects in the department. Field work projects include stream survey on various local reaches, and storm data collection on Stroubles Creek to build rating curves. Other projects I am a part of in my department include assisting in teaching undergraduate courses in the department such BSE 2484, Engines and Power Train Technology.

Personal Information

I am originally from Kernersville, NC, and received my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University before transitioning to BSE at Virginia Tech. I enjoy the outdoors and like to travel to beautiful places like Zion National Park in this photo with the NC State Caldwell Fellows. I also enjoy working with the youth group at my church where I live in Christiansburg, VA. During my time at NC State I was able to be a part of NC State Habitat for Humanity and helped built houses in 5 states over the 4 years I was a part of the organization.
